Yishun 10 – The End of An Era.

I’ve lived in the northern part of Singapore all my life.

And this, was the playground I grew up at.

This is Golden Village’s Yishun 10.

I’ve always thought the building looked like the Batman’s home. But my friend likes to think it’s the Wonder Woman’s haven because of the colours.

I remember when it was first opened in 1992. I was SO excited. A cinema was finally coming to our neighbourhood, and it was a cineplex with TEN cinemas within one building too! It was a new concept and Yishun was the very lucky neighbourhood to have it first.

The arrival of Yishun 10 changed my life. It brought the world of midnight movies to my doorstep and for the first time in our lives, my brother and I were allowed to go to the movies past 7pm.

At that time in 1992, this cinema was simply amazing. It was of a class of its own. Larger screens and amazing sound system. The most amazingly comfortable seats. With compartments to put our drinks in. WOW!

And now, 18 years later, I received an invitation to a renovation party.

They’re going to shut the cinema down, demolish the insides and do a grand renovation!

I don’t know if I’m very happy about that yet, but the management did promise that the new look will be more futuristic and modern. And it’ll have better sound systems!

So while I wait in eager anticipation for the reveal of the NEW Yishun 10 in 3 months, I did also capture some of the memorable parts of this place.

The interior of the cineplex. I have to say that not much has changed here since 1992. This place remains exactly the same as the first time I saw it when I was only 17 years old. Haha.. I cannot believe it has been THAT long!

The first GV uniform. The design looks o-biang now. But back them, it looked so chic to me. The staff looked like airline cabin crew in that uniform!

And by 2010, the uniform has evolved and gone back to basics. A simple polo-shirt. Haha!

I’ve been staring at this panel since the days when I was shorter and in school uniform. It has never been easy to decide if I wanted one of those combo sets or not.

Popcorn was also officially introduced to Singapore. No more kacang puteh in tubes made with paper!

This is the way I always have my popcorn – 1/2-1/2. Half sweet popcorn at the bottom, and the remaining half buttery salty popcorn on top. You’ll feel like you started on main course and finished with dessert. Yum!

I took my mother to the party and we had a great time being one of the privileged people to see this place before they completely change it.

I loved this place growing up, and am a little sad to see it go.

But I’m sure the new Yishun 10 is going to be just as great!
