Graffiti Photo Walk.

If you’ve seen my photo album in my Facebook profile, you would know that I did a Graffiti Photo Walk over the weekend.

It’s very unlike me to get up so early in the morning. These days the only way I would do that is really for a photo shoot. At 7am and with only 2 hours of sleep the night before, we lugged our gear and drove to a part of the city that everyone told us not to go to. When friends heard that we were going to shoot graffiti, they gave us skeptical looks and asked, “Is it safe?”

Frankly, I didn’t know. And it was good that I was too sleepy to think about it that morning.

When we arrived at the meeting point, I started to feel very relaxed. So many people were going for the walk. Sure safe lah.

Everyone carried more stylo-mylo and more expensive equipment than I did, so I figured if the thugs wanted cameras, they would go for the full frames and the L lenses and not my unimpressive looking Canon 500D. Heehee…

This was the first spot and everyone was still crowding here trying to shoot. Within 10 mins, this crowd thinned out and dispersed in all directions.

Everyone has their own interpretation of what they see. And mine is tightly cropped.

Some people brought props. Don’t play play. This BOY is a prop, ok.

I wish I had brought some props. But hey, I can improvise. The hubby can fill in.

Although that means he looks pretty cool while I look like a retard squatting in the middle of the road.

My favourite part of the walk has got to be under the highway.

Look at those walls!

Super impressive. I was intrigued! I had lots of questions in my head.. Who did this? What inspired it? What was the conceptualisation process like? How did they get the paint? How did they get so high up? Who painted it? What are the underlying messages?

Every piece of wall art has a story behind it. I wish I could find out what it was.

We had heaps of fun. I think the other walkers didn’t think we were very serious. We were laughing around, fooling around with Tomo, camwhoring and posing for each other and even did reflection shots. Haha.. We received a few amused looks and only one other walker tried to shoot Tomo as well. =)

Tomo had a rough day because I made him do quite a few stunts that resulted in a few bad falls. He’s stained yellow at one side now. =p The sacrifice was worth it.. check out his shot later..

It’s funny how just getting out with my camera lifted my spirits heaps and I feel like I connected a little bit more with South Africa.

Who knows? I may just grow to really enjoy it here.
