The Common Expression in South Africa.
Whenever I visit squatter settlements, the kids are always the most welcoming.
They would run over to me as soon as I arrive. They would scream Hello, wave, kiss my hand or hug me. Most of them know only the Zulu language and they don’t understand much English. So it’s really hard to communicate with them.
But the one thing they will ALL know.. is to say Sharp! and raise their thumb and come forward and do a thumb rub/bump thumb.
Singaporeans have our Shiok!, and the South Africans have their Sharp!
It’s really sweet when a huge bunch of kids rush forward and want to Sharp! thumb bump you. Everyone would be holding up their thumb at you.
So if you ever meet a South African child and don’t know what to say to him or her.. just raise your thumb up and say Sharp!
