Hanging Out With My Girlfriends

Posted on May 10, 2013 in Bing, Friends, Reviews & Advertorials

Just before I left South Africa, one of the last things I did with a couple of my gal pals was chill out over champagne and spa treatments at the Rain Urban Boutique. Rain was a quiet little nook in the bustling mall of Rosebank and it was delightful to get discounted rates to a morning of indulgence. I loved that the place was painted a Tiffany-like blue and everything was so neat and modern. For a special occasion, they would even organise champagne and nibbles! My girlfriends and I were pampered in shoulder massages, foot massages and manicures. All the while sipping bubbly and nibbling at cheese. It was a lovely way to spend a morning together. Looking back, it was probably the last time we would ever get together like this.. well, at least for a long...

High Tea At The Saxon, Johannesburg

Posted on Mar 25, 2013 in Bing, Food & Cooking, Friends, South Africa

There’s a side of Johannesburg that’s very posh and sophisticated that much of the rest of the world doesn’t know about. The media likes to show the crime stories and squatter settlement pictures of South Africa, so everyone at home thinks we live in grass huts and dodge bullets every day. The truth is there are bits of Joburg that are super nice and one of the nicest things to do on a Sunday afternoon is to enjoy high tea with friends at a super fancy hotel. And this one just happens to be a few minutes drive away from our home. It’s called The Saxon Hotel and is probably the fanciest hotel in Joburg, a close fight with the Westcliff Hotel, where we had high tea at last year too. The Saxon is tucked away in a very...

Bungee Jump At Orlando Towers, Johannesburg

Posted on Mar 13, 2013 in Bing, Friends, South Africa

Last weekend, we attended a party where some new South African friends started asking me if I’ve done this and that in Johannesburg, and one of the questions was – “Have you jumped off the Orlando Towers?” I was like, “Of course not, I’m not crazy.” Yeap.. one must be nuts to hang by a cable from the ankles and throw themselves off these – And fortunately (or unfortunately?) for us, we have some friends who were nuts enough to give it a try. Hahaha. The hubby and I were not going to miss this. We got to the towers to be our friends’ cheerleading team/videographer/photographer for the day. That was our official role. But really, we were just there to poke fun at their nervousness and make sure they don’t chicken out at the last minute. #evil The...

Spanish Meatballs In Tomato Sauce

Posted on Nov 24, 2012 in Bing, Food & Cooking, Friends

Among all my culinary influences, other than my mother, the one person who has cooked for and influenced me the most is my friend, Issachar. No friend has fed me (and our friends) as much as he has. He’s been dabbling in culinary experiments since we were 17. When the rest of us were still trying to figure out how to fry an egg, Issachar was already making exotic Southeast Asian food and baking French pastries in his home kitchen. The food he cooked, even as a teenager, was always fabulous. So when Issachar decided to start his own restaurant, I sat right up. That means I would be able to savour his cooking any time I wanted. And when he told me that it was going to be a Spanish bar-restaurant called Kaixo, I practically jumped with excitement....
