We Danced The Gumboot Dance

When my friends from Singapore were visiting me in Johannesburg, I took them to visit one of my favourite places in South Africa – Kliptown. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in this township (squatter settlement) and have a lot of affection for the youths in the Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP). I couldn’t wait for my friends to meet this wonderful bunch of young people. These days, many of the kids recognise me. Few Asians step into Kliptown on a regular basis, and I think the kids have finally gotten used to seeing me walk about with my camera in their territory. Although many of them would shyly come and sit next to me or huddle up to me for a Sharp! thumb bump, they get completely confused when I camwhore with them. LOL! The boys performed their...

Our Hunt For Lions

It was a beautiful morning and my friends and I woke up in high spirits for our morning game drive in the bush. Every morning starts with a hunt for what we’ve decided to call the egg yolk. It was a rather gloomy day but my friend Mark was perky and he hopped on to the land rover and said excitedly – I prayed for lions today! I had told them earlier that the last time I was in the bush, we had seen lots of animals because our gal had prayed for them. Great! Now that we had a prayer, we were confident that we would be blessed with a lion sighting! Typically, the best way to move about in the bush is on a land rover like this. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that we can also...

My Friends and I In The Bush

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 in Bing, Friends, Nature, South Africa

A bunch of our friends visited us and we set off on a safari trip together. I was excited to introduce our friends to the wonderful place that the locals so affectionately call “bush”. It’s been a while since my last major bush trip and I missed seeing all the animals. Travelling with a bunch of rather crazy friends was heaps of fun. We didn’t have a lot of luck in the beginning, but everyone was pretty cool and relaxed and waited patiently for the animals to decide to show up. That’s the thing about safari trips. I often get people emailing me to ask me if a safari trip in Africa is like what you see in National Geographic or Animal Planet. I never really know what to say. It’s not like going to the zoo for sure,...

Friends Who Cook

My mom and dad like to call me in the evening, South African time, and without fail, they would ask, “Aren’t you supposed to be cooking dinner?” The truth is we don’t (have to) cook every day at home because we have lots of friends in South Africa who cook and I really do eat like a queen without lifting a finger on some days. Sometimes we do meet at a restaurant, but most of the time, it’s a home cooked meal. Or rather, elaborate and hearty home cooked meals. Just to give some recent examples, here’s me digging into a sumptuous Mexican meal. Definitely the best home cooked Mexican meal we’ve ever had. Look at the size of the fajita I was building! Margaritas to kick off the evening, followed by fajitas, tacos, pico de gallo, guacamole, mexican...

Ice Hockey In Johannesburg

Posted on Mar 22, 2012 in Bing, Friends, South Africa

When our friend, David, who’s a fellow Singaporean told us that he plays ice hockey in Johannesburg, we thought he was bluffing and just trying to be cool around us. Where??!!? And most importantly, for a Singaporean, it’s When did you learn it?!?? Ice hockey is not a common game in Singapore. Even hockey isn’t that popular in where I come from. I think there are only two or three places where one can ice skate in Singapore and it’s one of those sports that many of us have tried our hand (or rather, legs) at at some point in our younger days, but ended up not continuing it because we couldn’t afford the entrance fees to the rink and the transport time and cost to get there. I never knew people played ice hockey in Singapore. Anyways, David...
